Framing Antique Wooden Panel

Just completed the last batch of framing works before Chinese New Year. The last job we did today is for Penaga Hotel. The very nice and friendly owner, Angela has given us some of her old wooden panels to be framed up; and I believe these beautiful panels were probably originated from old house's window/door fitting or may be from the old furniture as well.

The framing is quite straight forward. As Angela didn't request us to make a shadow box like what usually we do for object or collectibles framing. Anyway, we still need to do some touching up works on the wooden panels as the edges is not only uneven but are not in the good condition. Therefore we had applied some rustic tone colour on the panel edges and re sanding them to make them fit to the frames.

The nation's art is being damaged and destroyed by shoddy framing, warn conservators. Raymond Gill reports.

THEY might describe themselves as a ''small committed minority'' but about 30 framers, conservators and archivists gathered last week to discuss the vital - but unsexy - topic of how the poor conservation of art and historical material outside of our main public collections is a huge cost to the country's cultural heritage.

The one-day symposium at the Melbourne Convention Centre was organised by Canberra framer Quentin Webster for the Professional Picture Framers' Association and moderated by Melbourne University conservator Associate Professor Robyn Sloggett. It discussed the shortsightedness of investing in art while failing to acknowledge that proper conservation was the only way to preserve its looks and value.

''There's a phenomenal amount of bad framing destroying art works,'' said Webster, referring to art held in private hands, as well as in schools, small museums, libraries and historical associations.

Basic dangers such as exposure to light, variations in temperature and humidity, and ''environmental pollution'' are often underestimated, if not disregarded.

Even when works are professionally framed, the buyer often chooses the cheapest option but this could cause long-term damage. Delegates told horror stories of framers guaranteeing a short life for valuable art works by using glue, staples and buffered matt boards instead of more expensive but effective materials. The establishment of a regulatory authority for framers was suggested as a way of lifting standards and owners more aware of proper conservation.

''We need the community to put pressure on the framing industry, as that will be only way we will get things to change,'' Webster said.

''The federal government spent $39 million in four years promoting arts and crafts but how much of that goes to conservation? Cultural heritage is given little prominence in national policy-making,'' he said.

Associate Professor Sloggett said the thousands of framers in cities, regional areas and indigenous communities were often the only or last contact an artist might have with his or work after it is sold, so their role was often underestimated.

''We need to preserve the provenance chain from a work's creation,'' the art fraud expert said, adding that such records were crucial when a work's authenticity was questioned.

The symposium also discussed the challenges of conserving art when artists were increasingly using materials with short life-spans.

''Do people realise the work that they are spending a lot of money on might not last 50 years?'' one delegate asked, prompting the suggestion that art patrons need to be clearly advised about each work's conservation by its vendor.

Associate Professor Sloggett said her conservation department at Melbourne University had only recently begun working with the National Film and Sound Archive on the preservation of digital art work.

So what's her advice if you've recently spent tens of thousand of dollars on some video art and have it stored along with the other CDs near your hi-fi system?

''Don't vacuum near it,'' she advises. ''The vibrations affect its integrity''.

Signed sports jersey of Manchester United. This was a challenging job. The client requested to have it frame in such a way that the back of the jersey is visible!

It is now sandwiched between two layers of acrylic sheet. Instead of a mounting board backing, we used a mirror as the background. And in order to get the reflection of the back of the jersey from the mirror, the sandwiched jersey will need to be placed about 4 inches away from the mirror, so that the reflection on the mirror is wide enough to see the whole jersey .. and here are the picture from different angle, you'll see the reflection of GIGGS 11

Last month I have framed more than 20 number of art and craft items which my customer bought from Bali . The lastest one is a heavy sandstone. As usual, I asked what my customer had in their mind and what made them want to bring this heavy stone back from Bali? (It is very heavy!! Almost 15kg!...some of them even bought a few different design and hand carried back to Penang !) . I almost heard the same answer; CHEAP and NICE!

With the low cost airline like Air Asia, now Everyone can fly to neighbouring holiday destination like Bali and Macau without spending much.....is just like going to Kuala Lumpur!! ( The toll collection is more than the air ticket!)

A Key that worth millions!

Believe it or not, this key worth 2 millions. That's why my client, Mr. Lim is so keen to frame it! Mr. Lim just bought an old bangalow in Georgetown. He paid 2 millions to the previous owner and he was just given a key to enter this bangalow. So, he told me it is worth 2 millions. ( Oh, I see!! )

I order to make this frame stand up. I mounted it on top of the acrylic blok. I use a brass leaf finished wood frame to match the brass colour key. Would look better with fabric background...but again my client has his budget for that.....

Anyhow, the overall presentation is OK... vintage key with modern classic frame! My client love it!

Sport Memorabilia

Sometime shadow box framing isn't anything special but the contents is pretty cool. The content always make me thinks of other matters...

I framed a lof of sports related stuffs like golf putter, golf ball , tennis racket, ping pong racket, ..... But one of the hottest item that Malaysian love to keep in their memory is badminton racket. I noticed that most of the Malaysian's love this game, like me. History also tell us that Malaysia was once the super power house of the game. But just pity that Malaysia has not produce any world class players for quite sometime. The only good player that we have in our country currently is Lee Chong Wei. I am sure many of us are wondering when we can have another Datuk Lee in the next Olympic in London ??? :(

Double Glazing Framed Wedding Photo

I was asked to frame a wedding photograph with the double glazing (sandwich) method again. I wondered so many young ladies like this kind of framing lately. They said they see this kind of `framing' in bridal house and it looks trendy and modern! ( yeah...yeah...of cause I know..and it was seen in the market quite long ago...what so special??..)

Anyway, as a responsible framer I will tell them it is not recommended as the glass will directly touching the photo, the moisture will make the photo stick to the glass eventually. In most cases, they dont really believe me and insisted the bridal house recommeded it. So, normally I will take some protective measure by encapsulating the photo first before I frame it. At least I could ensure the photo has longer life span. I am wondering why most of the bridal house in Penang never care about their customer's interest and always mislead their customers.

We love Amsterdam. Amsterdam is a wonderful city. The city has great character, and a tremendous sense of history. We found the Dutchmen are wonderfully friendly, and charming people, who made us feel welcome when we were there 2 years ago.

The loveliest memory we have of our stay in the Netherlands was the ORANGE colour...we see thiscolour everywhere in Amsterdam. See, what we had there!

Stretched canvas delivered to the show house at Sentral Green, Relau site. Ready to hung!

Just completed a framing job for my client this afternoon. The artwork measuring 12.5 feet (height) and 5 feet ( width). We took 6 hours to get the job done.

The framing method is called `Gallery wrapped'. A `gallery wrap' is the process of wrapping the printed canvas around a custom made stretcher frame. The image is wrapped around the frame for a clean, modern look.

We stretched the canvas print to the 1.5" four stretchers hard wood timber frame. The frame is strengthen with 6 pcs of internal timber bars support before canvas is stretched. We also made the frame stronger and more rigid with the 4mm thick plywood .

Tips : Proper canvas stretching is crucial to properly display Prints on Canvas. If the Canvas is pulled too tight it can damage the image and if it is not stretched with enough tension so the canvas art is properly taut around the stretcher bars or strips then you will see waves in the painting or bubbles where the canvas is loosely pulled.

For the past 10 years working as a framer. I would say that custom framing is not an easy business to run in Malaysia. Why I say? just listen to things that customers love to say,

`wow, so expensive one ah! the framing is cost more than my picture, you know!!!'
`aiya....why so expensive one...framing is just to put 4 pieces of wood together....so easy work, you charge me so expensive meh?!'
`hey, boss. Dont charge me expensive huh....I want something cheap but look very big (grand) and very nice one!'
`can not give discount meh? Tesco and Giant also give discount this week!'
`can less 30% ah? no budget for that....'
`glass shop at Chulia Street charge me much more cheaper you know?....I know you can do good design but I see the materials are the same one!'
`Never mind la....It doesn't matter what is looks like as long as it is cheap, anyhow it's just a gift'
`I am very kiam siap type, dont charge me high laa.....'

Just complete a artwork coordination for a condominium show unit of Central Park, Batu Lanchang, Penang. The show unit is located at Gurney Tower, above corporate office of the property developer.

The arwork proposed and selected for the show unit comprised of sepia landscape photo with silver aluminium frame for the family living area. And there is another digital altered landscaped photo, canvas triplet print for the living area.

The view of Penang so much different from higher angle compare to the view from ground. Seems like the development along the beach is overwhelming ... there was once, an Italian friend told me, he misses the Penang of 60s' ... the beach was so beautiful.

One of the best ways to remember a special occasion is a framed souvenir, treasured for

the

memories it evokes every time we look at it.

Unfortunately, the humidity of our tropical climate can affect the contents of the frame, often making its presence known through little brown specks which eventually ruin the entire picture.

“If it is not properly framed using the correct materials and technique, it will deteriorate,” said Khoo Eng Theng.

And he should know, as he is the only Guild Commended Framer in Malaysia, an internationally-recognised qualification from the Fine Art Trade Guild in Britain.

This means Khoo possesses a thorough knowledge of the latest framing techniques, after passing some very stringent tests, including a practical.

Khoo, 38, who is from Kulim, Kedah, graduated from Universiti Sains Malaysia in 1995 after which he worked in the construction industry, specialising in the renovation of old houses.

“Clients decorating their houses kept asking me to recommend a good framer,” he explained, “and that piqued my interest. If there was such a demand out there, why not do it myself?”

With the building industry slowing down post-1997, Khoo decided to take a leap, and learnt basic framing skills from a friend. He started a small workshop in Sungei Nibong, where he was able to service friends, relatives and contractors.

However, he quickly came to the conclusion that although local craftsmen are competent enough, the techniques used were not exactly scientific. In other words, if it looked good enough, it would do. “I wanted to provide better service than that,” Khoo continued.

That’s when he decided to look further into the craft. “I realised that there was enormous potential in the business.”

As the economy grew, Malaysians were becoming increasingly serious art collectors, and artists needed fine framing to display their work to best advantage.”

Trawling the Net, he found the FATG in South West London, enrolled and started learning. However, it wasn’t easy for the Chinese-educated man. “It was a real challenge,” he grimaced. “All the books I had to read up on were in English.”

It didn’t come cheap either: the final test had to be done in Britain, so he travelled there with his artist wife, Ching Ching, who was very supportive of him.

The finals consisted of two nerve-wrecking tests: a 1½ hour paper in which he had to answer questions like, “You are given a piece of old porcelain. Explain the method that you would use to frame it, the material used, and why you chose to do it that way.”

The second was a practical where he had to frame a painting using a prescribed method, and he was marked on his knowledge, technique and workmanship.

“As it had to be done using a machine I had never seen before, they were very good about it and gave me extra time.”

The first Asian to sit for the qualification, he has done Malaysia proud.

“They were apparently very impressed with my work,” he said, grinning bashfully. Considering the handicaps he had to work with: language, unfamiliar tools and environment, and presumably jet-lag to boot, the string of resounding As and a smattering of Bs he managed was an achievement indeed.

The qualification entitles him to proudly use the words “Master Frame Maker and Designer” after his name.

However, apart from a mouthful of words for a title, what else has it given him? “I have learnt a lot from it,” he claimed.

“It’s shown me the right and wrong ways to frame, and given me the confidence to tackle more unusual projects.”

Other than old documents and photographs, fabrics, even forks and spoons, unusual treasured items that he has been asked to frame are two pairs of shoes, worn by a father and son, and a genuine Liverpool jersey that was brought in by a football fan.

Not content with one qualification, Khoo is now planning to obtain a scholarship from the US-based Professional Picture Framers’ Association in Portland, Oregon.

“Ultimately, my aim is to become a Preservation Framer, using materials like UV-filtered glass and acid-free paper which will protect against the effects of pollutants.

“This is museum-quality framing, meant to last for many generations to come,” he added.

Unfortunately, much of the material required also happens to be imported, so it can be quite expensive.

“Good local wood is also hard to come by, as they are more profitable if exported,” he lamented. He uses different woods like ramui, jelutong and even durian from Pahang, Selangor and Perak.

Not everyone will have access to Khoo’s expertise, so what should you look for when entrusting a framer with your precious mementos?

“His workshop should be clean and tidy, without food, dust or cigarette smoke lingering about the place,” he said. “View the samples on display so you have a good idea of his workmanship.”

Khoo’s studio Artbug in Nagore Road is a good example: it is neat and trendy, beautifully-crafted frames of different sizes and unique designs, some complete with cute little wooden doors, fill it wall-to-wall.

“Ask for their opinion about what you wish to frame. A good framer must also be prepared to give advice,” he added.

Khoo, now a master craftsman, felt that the consumer had the right to ask for preservation of their treasured belongings, and a frame maker’s responsibility was not just to beautify but also to protect them.

Framed Songket installation for Heritage Bay Resort (Kelab Teluk Warisan), Terengganu

Had been away to Pulau Duyong, Kuala Terengganu for the installation of the framed songket in Heritage Bay Resort. (Kelab Teluk Warisan) ..

It is for the 13 units of Royal Suites. Here is the facet .. though the landscape is not fully complete yet, the scenery of Sungai Terengganu and the river bank is quite eye catching.. and.. haha the sun is really HOT! ..

here are some snapshot of the interior, the designer haven't fully complete with the setup of furniture. but here you go.. some nice picture of our framing work.

Hotel Framing Work In Terengganu

hooray...finally we completed the works!!

This job is a quite difficult as the size was big and heavy. Morever there is another framed SONGKET ( http://www.ppak.kelantan.edu.my/culture/songket/songket.htm) to be attached to the main frame. Measuring 2 metre high, using 5mm thick casting acrylic sheet and 4 inches wood moulding, the weight is 22kg each. It take us 10 days to complete these 65nos of frames.

I think I need a good rest after this job. Both my assistants, my wife and myself were rushing and worked 12 hours a day to get it done before the handling over date.

Tomorrow, we will heading to east coast for the frames installation. I have engaged 5 local carpenters there for this installation work. Hopefully, everthing would be fine after this...

To be honest, I am too tired after this job. I guess I had already run out of gas...Anyway we were having fun of doing it. CHEERS!!!

Indian Embroidered Textiles

I always enjoy framing Indian textiles. This ethnic style of textile is rich of colors, shiny beaded, beautiful hand-embroidery and complex patchwork patterns are all distinctive features of Indian textile. With a nice design frame, these textiles always making a beautiful wall hanging decor.

Today, I just complete another frame for my customer, Shangka. He just came back from his home country, India and he bought this textile to decorate his living hall. I design a simple contemporary design to match his existing home interior stlye.

Today I made another frame using wood that modified from an unwanted wooden box. I collected this pine wood box from an electronic factory in Bayan Lepas.

I dismantled the wooden box and cut it into smaller size to fit in my frame. After that I applied a coat of dark stain on it. The wooden grain turn up beautifully after that. Before encasing it, I engraved some wording with my engraving knife on it. ( to descripe the miniature sandstone that my customer brought from Combodia).

See, I am not only save some money..... but also play my part on recycling ...

A guest from Australia.

Today a friend from down under visited me again, a regular guest to Penang Island. Richard is from Adelaide.

He brought me a few lettering cut matboards by his Wizard CMC this time. The matboard with the lettering cut of ARTBUG!( my gallery name on it!) He wanted to give me an idea how a CMC could help my business if I can buy one. He still feel surprised to see how could I cut different shape of opening just with my manual cutter and a few plastic template.

Richard also brought some framing material catalogs for my reference. I understand that he just want to help me so that I could have more complete framing materials in my workshop one day. He said he is going back to check with Australia distributor like Antons and LJ if they can arrange to export their products to Malaysia! ( what can I say......Richard is so kind to share his information and very sincere offering his help....I couldnt give him a nicely cut matboard as he does as he has a better one at his workshop. So I invited him for a lunch!! and I am glad that he was enjoying our local dishes...)

Just forget to let you guys know that he is a one of the Committee Members of PICTURE FRAMERS GUILD OF AUSTRALIA. (PFGA) He is definately the best and a very hardworking committee member! He help the framer even not from his country and not belong to his chapter. ( I am a PPFA member of US and Fine Art Trade Guild of UK! )

Heritage Bay Club, is a marina club and resort. Just newly opened in Kuala Terengganu, Malaysia. We had supplied the decorative frame of the wood carving and songket fabric for their suite.

Scrapbooking with Frame for our Client

Restaurant Project

Nagore Road, the place that we are located now is full of restaurants. Near to us, you also see another food paradise, The New World Park, Penang.

We had 2 framing orders from neighbouring restaurants last week. The first one is Thai food restaurant and another one is western food restaurant.

The Chili Corner Thai food restaurant owner passed me some plastic chili to be framed. He tend to hang the frame in front of the counter. He asked my help to design the artwork in order to make the red chili look spicy and hot!! (It think probably he means outstanding!) Ching designed the artwork as he loved it very much.

And I just get a few done just now.

Ching's broken watch!

Ching had accidently broken her Adidas sport watch which I gave her as a gift for her birthday few years ago. She like the watch very much and she was disapponted that she cant wear it for aerobic class again.

Since the belt couldnt be replaced, we decided to frame it up ( we also feel that the watch has the sentimental's value for both of us ). So, she designed the background artwork and I had just get it framed just now.

Tomorrow, I will hang it in my gallery and show my customers even the broken stuff can be framed!!

Father Day Gift

Last week I did a frame for my customer. It is her father's 50 years old ping pong racket, the racket mean so much to her father and she decided to frame it and want to give him a surprise on the Father Day.

I use a hand finished wooden frame and intended to find some antique looked matting but found none from our supplier. So, Ching had to do the artworks design for the frame background. Since we can't found the old look colour and texture style matting here, so we had to design an `artificial faded colour' finishing to replace the antique look's texture matboard. We inserted some wording (greeting and some history) as well so that someone will appreciate when they look at the frame.

PPFA Certified Picture Framer Exam

I always want to be able to speak and understand well English language. But I still facing difficulties to understand it whenever I read an English Book or watching a Hollywood movie.

This time I have no choice. Because of the CPF exam, I bought my 2nd English dictionary two weeks ago. ( I bought my first one during my schooling day, the Indian English teacher `forced’ us to do so! And now I regret I didn’t listen to him and fully utilize the dictionary as much as possible. ).

So now and again, I can’t understand so many words in these reference books recommended by PPFA, there are so many terms and wording that confusing me. I need to browse the dictionary more than 10 times just only doing one page of reading! How I am going to finish so many books within 11 days after spending so much time on `reading’ dictionary!!!

Now, there are only few days left before I fly to Australia for my test. You know what?! I am still browsing my brand new dictionary more than the books every night!!! I feel worry that I might catch by the tricky questions because of my poor understanding…..

What happened to Malaysia artist and gallery?

I am a frame maker and I love to tour around the art gallery whenever I see one , or there is an exhibition going on, I think I will be one of the uninvited guest to visit.

It is quite common as a qualify framer, I expected to see some good framing for original painting, especially the expensive one, but what a let down. The majority of the frames are not properly done and preserve. Some were badly fitting with the width of the "gap" of the internal frame varying on each side. On the water colours where mat board was used, I found that most of matting are over cuts and hooked corners. All the mat are not acid free as well!

I dared to question some of the gallerists about these faults and got some interesting (and funny!) replies.....

1) aiya...the buyer is only interested in the art, they can change the framing if they like!
2) as an artist, the frame are secondary.
3) aiyo.....framing is so expensive la.. we have so many artworks to be framed, you know??.
4) Yes I can see the frame is damaged....we are rushing for the show... a last minute work, this kind of workmanship considered OK laa.....
5) proper framing....who care? Nobody will know!

These pictures had price tags from RM 2,000 to RM20,000 - many over RM10,000. I found it very disappointing to see such expensive original art so sloppily framed.
Are the artists or the galleries choosing the wrong framers?
Are the framers failing to sell their skills ?
Can't find any trained or experinced framers in their area?
Or the artist never feel their own work is worth for good framing?
Gallery curator who doesnt care??

Tibet and the Beijing Olympics 2008

Tibet and Beijing Olympic seems become another hot issue recently.Some western countries have create tension by using the human right issue towards the hitorical sport event's organizer. Sometime I am wondering why Dalai want to raise the independant's matter during this time? Isnt that he is a monk! Why involved in politics? And why those countries tend to boycott the Beijing Olympics because of it's China's interior matter? What is the motive behind?...I think this is not good to manipulate the human right issue and fail the sporting event! Go and fight China and dont disturb the Olympics!!
Anyhow, This issue is a bit complicated for an ordinary man, like me. So, I better keep my mouth shut!

When the Tibet issue become the topic for the whole world, it just happened that I have so many Tibet's Thanka painting to be frame recently. Even the walk in customer offered much higher price to buy from my another customer's thanka painting (which is framed in my gallery). Suddenly, Thanka painting becomes a popular painting! ( I dont know if Christie's has noticed that!) Previously nobody want it here because those painting are more on religious, the monk has blessed and prayed on the painting. So, only buddist like me will keep it. But now, it is selling like hot cake! I had framed about 10 pieces of thanka painting in the last 2 weeks. I think I want to sell the one that I hang in my room. I will use that money to buy a PDA!
